When Nordic Aqua Partners (NOAP) decided to build a 20,000-ton land-based salmon farm in Ningbo, near Shanghai, they contacted us at AKVA group.

Atlantic salmon has become a popular fish in Asia, and demand is growing rapidly. It is often used for sushi and sashimi because of its attractive colour and firm texture. Salmon is also healthy, with high levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and it is a good source of vitamins and minerals.

The goal of the NOAP project is to produce high-quality live Atlantic salmon locally for Chinese consumers – eliminating the need for airfreight from abroad and significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

Construction of this large Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) began in 2021, and fish production was already underway by 2023. In 2024, output reached 3,500 tons of live salmon at 4–5 kg. By the end of 2025, production is expected to reach 4,000 tons of larger salmon weighing 6–7 kg.

Phase 2, adding another 4,000 tons, will be completed by the end of 2025, bringing annual production to 8,000 tons. The final target of 20,000 tons of live salmon per year will be achieved when Phase 3, adding 12,000 tons, is completed in the coming years.

Since the start, NOAP and AKVA group have enjoyed an excellent working relationship in bringing the project to life. The NOAP team consists of experienced project developers, financiers, and fish farmers – a strong partner that AKVA group is proud to collaborate with.

The concept is expected to be expanded to other parts of China, such as Greater Beijing and Hong Kong. The current facility will also serve as a training site for local RAS operators to support future expansion.
